The summer months bring about the slowest time of the year for high school sports. The movie industry, however, enjoys a nice boost at the box office. With that in mind, we’ve created a list of our 10 favorite high school sports movies, in an attempt to tide you over until ACTUAL high school sports are back:
10. Varsity Blues
In Texas, perhaps more than anywhere else, football is king. That fact is well-illustrated in Varsity Blues, as we witness the pressures of playing football in a town (and for a coach) that wants to win above all else.
9. He Got Game
NBA star Ray Allen portrays Jesus Shuttlesworth, the #1 high school basketball player in the country. Add in Spike Lee and Denzel Washington and you have a basketball-themed drama fit for our list.
8. Bring It On
While this list features mostly football and basketball movies, this high school cheerleading flick fits in nicely at number eight.
Cuba Gooding Jr. delivers a wonderful performance as “Radio,” a mentally disabled student who befriends the school’s head football coach and becomes an inspiring member of the team.
6. Friday Night Lights
Just like Varsity Blues, Friday Night Lights immerses us in the world of Texas high school football. Boobie Miles, Permian High School’s star player, is hurt in the first game of the season, and the team must look to their head coach, Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) for guidance.
5. The Blind Side
More people would recognize Quinton Aaron (the actor who played Michael Oher) than the actual Michael Oher if they passed him on the street thanks to this movie. It also happened to bring in over $300 million in box office sales.
4. High School Musical
We’re probably going to have some people disagree with us here, but you can’t argue with the numbers: The High School Musical franchise brought in roughly $1 billion in operating profit for Disney in the years 2006 & 2007, and High School Musical 3 recorded $252 million in gross, global box office sales. So if you disagree with these movies being on our list, we have one piece of advice -- get your head in the game!
3. The Karate Kid
We made a judgement call to include The Karate Kid, even though it doesn’t technically feature organized high school sports. It’s a great movie regardless, and reminds us that keeping a healthy balance between training and doing your chores can be very beneficial!
Norman Dale and his controversial coaching methods incite a tiny town in Indiana on the way to an improbable run to the state championship basketball game. This classic is good enough for second on our list.
1. Remember the Titans
Yes, it’s cliche, and yes, the story has Hollywood’s fingerprints all over it, but c’mon! Who doesn’t tear up when Gerry calls Julius his brother? Not to mention the incredible soundtrack! And I swear, if I ever get the chance to coach a football team, I’m gonna use Coach Yoast’s pump up speech for the defense.
This is a rankings list on the internet, so I'm sure you all agree with it 100%, but just in case you don't, feel free to comment with YOUR favorite High School Sports movies! And visit our website to watch LIVE high school action during this upcoming school year!
