NFHS Network Games of the Week

As we near the end of September, region play kicks things up a notch. The games mean more, the rivalries are more intense, the rust of the new season is gone.

Hundreds of teams will be featured on the NFHS Network this weekend, but these five matchups stick out above all others.

The #1 team in the entire country and the top ranked teams in three different states are in action this weekend, and they will not disappoint. Mark your calendars, and tune in for these Games of the Week!

 

1. #1 Mater Dei (CA) vs. St. Mary's (CA)

What more is there to say about the #1 team in the country? Mater Dei has beaten its first four opponents by a score of 170-42, including a 35-21 win over the #11 team in the country, Bishop Gorman. St. Mary's is no slouch at 3-1, but they should expect a tough test from the Monarchs.

Note: This game will be played Saturday at 7:00 pm PT at Levi's Stadium (home of the San Francisco 49ers)

2. #1 Brentwood Academy (TN) vs. #14 Knoxville Catholic (TN)

The #1 team in Tennessee, Brentwood Academy, is coming off back-to-back state championships, and has started the 2017 season 4-0. Knoxville Catholic has a ton of talent, and plays an exciting brand of football. They're averaging 38 points per game on the season, but their problems lie on the defensive side of the ball, where they're letting up 36.6 points per game. This one has all the makings of a shootout.

The Pearl Pirates come into this Mississippi showdown undefeated and ranked #2 in the state (#57 in the country). Petal has had a tougher time in the early going, having lost to two of the top 25 teams in the state by a combined eight points.

4. #1 Rio Rancho (NM) vs. #3 Manzano (NM)

If you want to talk about domination, look no further than these two New Mexico juggernauts. Rio Rancho and Manzano have combined to start the season 8-0 and outscored their opponents 350-103. Something has to give on Saturday, when the #1 and #3 teams in the state meet.

5. #8 Colquitt (GA) vs. Valdosta (GA)

It's a deep south matchup between two of the state's legendary programs. Colquitt and Valdosta have combined for three GHSA State Championships over the past three seasons, and while the early part of the season hasn't gone exactly how Valdosta wanted, they're still a dangerous team playing in a heated rivalry game. Keep an eye on two of the countries best linebackers: Zakoby McClain for Valdosta and JJ Peterson for Colquitt.
