High School Games of the Week

Posted by Jacob Plunkett on 9/28/17 1:39 PM

It's hard to believe it's almost October.

Feels like just last week we were gearing up for the opening games of the high school season, but here we find ourselves, halfway through the regular season. Most of the flashy, interstate or out-of-region games are behind us; and while those are fun to watch, now is when a team makes or breaks its season.

As region play gears up, the teams know each other better -- rivalries add new chapters, and every game has playoff implications.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy another edition of the NFHS Network's Games of the Week:

1. #8 Colquitt (GA) vs. #2 Bishop Sullivan Catholic (VA)

After all that talk of interstate matchups being done with, we're (of course) leading things off with a Georgia vs. Virginia showdown. Both of these teams have played ridiculous schedules thus far, and it's reflected in their state rankings, despite a few losses. #8 Colquitt has managed theirs about as well as they could have hoped, going 5-1 while playing some of the top teams in Georgia, as well as Vista Murrieta out of California. #2 Bishop Sullivan hasn't fared quite as well, going 2-3 while playing two of the top 15 teams in the country, American Heritage (FL) and St. Frances Academy (MD). This should be a fun one, featuring a LOT of talent on both sides.

This Top 10 Oregon matchup features two teams with 3-1 records and lofty postseason goals. Tualatin is comng off a 21-9 loss to #1 West Linn, but it appears they've done a great job of turning around a team that finished the 2016 campagin 2-8. Lake Oswego coach Steve Coury, when asked about Tualatin, praised their defense: "They’ve got some guys up front that are big, physical kids. And they’ve got two linebackers that are really active guys. They pressure you some, mix things up that way. Defensively, they’re a tough team to prepare for. They cause you some issues just the way they play so hard." [The Oregonian/Oregon Live]

3. #22 Fort Osage (MO) vs. #2 Lee's Summit West (MO)

Playing from behind might not be something you'd expect to see from the #2 team in the state, but it's something Lee's Summit West has done with regularity in the 2017 season. Fortunately for them, they appear to be quite good at it. They're currently riding a streak of three straight come-from-behind victories, and while digging an early hole might not be the best long-term strategy, at least they've learned something about the resiliency of this team. They'll be challenged again this week, as they face off against the 2015 state champions, Fort Osage.

Players to watch...

Lee's Summit West:

Mario Goodrich / Class of 2018 / Nebraska Commit - #10 rated ATH in the COUNTRY (#248 player overall)

The #3 team in Alabama, Central (Phenix City), looks to continue its dominant start to the season - a start that's seen them go 4-0 while averaging 48 points per game. Opelika comes in at 3-2, after suffering a 19-14 loss to Russell last week. A win on the road at Central would be a huge statement for the Bulldogs.

Players to watch...

Central:

Justyn Ross / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted / #8 rated WR in the COUNTRY (#46 player overall)

Ray Thornton / Class of 2019 / Uncommitted / #3 rated S in Alabama

This should be an excellent game out of the Sunshine State. Both of these teams come in hot: Godby is undefeated on the season and has outscored opponents 165-35. Wakulla is riding a four-game losing streak after dropping the opener, and has outscored its opponents 172-59.
