High School Games of the Week

We're SO CLOSE to having football back FIVE DAYS A WEEK (Thursday through Monday) -- six if you count Tuesday-night #MACtion -- and we couldn't be happier.

For the purpose of this column, however, we'll stick to high school.

There's more than enough storylines to keep you entertained, but here are the TOP FIVE Games of the Week, including: the #1 team in the country, a state-championship rematch, a top-5 state matchup, and two other #1 teams in their respective states.

1. La Mirada (CA) vs. #1 Mater Dei (CA)

No better place to start than at #1, and that's exactly what Mater Dei is: the #1 team in the country. They're coming off a two-touchdown win over the #5 team in the country, Bishop Gorman, and have shown no signs of slowing down. They're stacked with big-time players, none more recognizable than Junior quarterback, JT Daniels. La Mirada will have their hands full trying to stop the Monarchs high-powered attack. Mater Dei dominated this matchup last year, to the tune of 48-0.

2. Roswell (GA) vs. #52 Colquitt (GA)

Colquitt makes yet another appearance on our Games of the Week, in part because they've steadily risen over the past three weeks in the MaxPreps National Rankings (now at #52), and in part because they keep scheduling really good teams. This one is a rematch of the 2015 GHSA 6A State Championship game - a game the Packers won. The Hornets made it back to the title game last year, where they lost to Grayson in a thriller. With former head coach, John Ford, leaving for Buford, Roswell has had a bit of a tough time adjusting in 2017. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the back-to-back state runner-ups, as they prepare for the surging Packers.

Players to watch...

Roswell:

Tyneil Hopper / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #1 rated TE in Georgia (#20 TE in the COUNTRY)

Christian Ford / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #13 rated WR in Georgia

Our only Top 5 State matchup this week, #4 Goddard and #2 Derby are two of the best in Kansas. Last year's meeting was shortened by lightning, but Derby had things well in-hand at the time of stoppage. Both teams are coming off wins in their opening week of play. Derby handled Eisenhower, 48-14, while Goddard beat Northwest 42-20 (while racking up six sacks). Tune in to watch the best game in the Midwest!

4. Clovis (NM) vs. Rio Rancho (NM)

The #1 team in the state of New Mexico, Rio Rancho, takes on the #6 team, Clovis. The two teams have squared off every year since 2004, with Rio Rancho leading the all-time series 7-6 (with RRHS winning the past six straight). Rio Rancho comes in having won 15 straight games, including a 42-10 win over Americas last week that saw quarterback Logan Bruere throw four first-half touchdowns. This will be the third game for Clovis Head Coach, Cal Fullerton, who replaced New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame coach Eric Roanhaus, who stepped down after the 2016 season.

Players to watch...

Rio Rancho:

Keshawn Banks / Class of 2018 / San Diego St. Commit - #1 rated DE in New Mexico

Evan Tafoya-Vallo / Class of 2018 / UTEP Commit - #1 rated OG in New Mexico

5. West Linn (OR) vs. South Medford (OR)

Similar to New Mexico, Oregon will see its #1 and #6 teams do battle this coming Friday, as West Linn hosts South Medford. Because of smoke from nearby wildfires, South Medford was forced to give up last week's home game, and instead travel to play Wilsonville (where they still won 35-7). Things don't get any easier this week, as they travel again, but this time to reigning state champ West Linn. The two teams met last year in Week 2, a game won 42-21 by West Linn. Medford comes in with a bounty of Senior starters, and hopes their experience provides a needed edge against a talented Lions roster.

Players to watch...

West Linn:

Keishon Dawkins / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #2 rated TE in Oregon

Ahmir McGee / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #2 rated RB in Oregon

Qawi Ntsasa / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #3 rated WR in Oregon

Zack Huffstutter / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #2 rated OLB in Oregon

South Medford:

Chase Cota / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #21 rated WR in the COUNTRY (#104 player overall)
