High School Games of the Week

Posted by Jacob Plunkett on 8/31/17 2:47 PM

Labor Day weekend is upon us, and with it the (unofficial) end of summer. Families come together to grill out or enjoy one last weekend at the lake before we're bombarded with pumpkin-spiced everything.

Labor Day also marks a HUGE weekend for High School Football. Some states are entering the third week of their season, whereas others are gearing up for their opening slate. Most importantly, the three-day weekend offers a prime opportunity for teams to travel, which means we, the fans, are the beneficiaries of some big-time interstate matchups.

Brace yourselves for the Labor Day edition of our TOP 5 Games of the Week:

 1. #10 American Heritage (FL) vs. #24 Liberty (NV)

Speaking of interstate matchups, we're starting things off with our biggest game of the weekend. Two Top 25 NATIONALLY-RANKED teams meet as #10 (#3 in Florida) American Heritage hosts #24 (#2 in Nevada) Liberty. These two teams share not only a mascot (Patriots), but also a winning tradition - Liberty is a seven-time defending region champ, and American Heritage is coming off a perfect 14-0, Florida State Championship-winning season. This one has the makeup of an instant classic.

3. Tucker (GA) vs. Colquitt (GA)

This game features two Top 10 Georgia teams (and Top 100 in the COUNTRY) who are very familiar with each other. In 2016, Tucker overcame a 17-3 halftime deficit to upend Colquitt, and the Packers will surely be looking for revenge. Both teams are 2-0 with quality wins (Colquitt dismantled California's Vista Murrieta last week, 26-7). These two teams have a ton of highly-rated players, but perhaps the most talented player on the field will be Tucker WR Josh Vann, who has 5 touchdowns already in only two games.

Players to watch...

Tucker:

Dylan Wonnum / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #9 rated OT in the COUNTRY (#92 player overall)

Josh Vann / Class of 2018 / South Carolina Commit - #32 rated WR in the COUNTRY (#163 player overall)

Michael Harris / Class of 2018 / Auburn Commit - #12 rated ILB in the COUNTRY (#266 player overall)

Derrick McLendon / Class of 2019 / Uncommitted - #20 rated Weak-side DE in the COUNTRY (#260 player overall)

Colquitt:

JJ Peterson / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #1 OLB in the COUNTRY (#42 player overall)

Steven Krajewski / Class of 2018 / Uncommitted - #4 Pro-Style QB in Georgia

We told you this week was full of interstate matchups! Here's another one, featuring the #2 team in Arkansas and the #3 team in Missouri. These two faced off last year, and Fayetteville managed to come away with a 26-21 win. Blue Springs bounced back from the early-season stumble by making it all the way to the Missouri 6A State Championship game. Fayetteville won the Arkansas 7A State Championship in convincing fashion, 53-19.

Players to watch...

Blue Springs:

Daniel Parker / Class of 2018 / Missouri Commit - #1 rated Strong-side DE in Missouri

One of the best games of the season so far was Knoxville Catholic against Maryville in Week 1. The Irish barely lost that one, but they've proven to be one of the most explosive teams in the country. The schedule doesn't get any easier, as the #21 ranked team in Tennessee plays host to the #13 team in Georgia, Eagle's Landing Christian Academy. These two teams have never met, but both are ranked #1 in their respective classes, and we should be in for a good one.

Players to watch...

Eagle's Landing:

Tre Douglas / Class of 2018 / Vandy Commit - #7 rated CB in Georgia

Knoxville Catholic:
